Marian boys, girls sweep

There were different kinds of emotions that circumvented the air for a band of cross country runners at Weatherly High School.

Without question, the Wreckers were all thinking of their late leader Jonathan Kiddish who passed away suddenly this past summer. No one needed to say his name, the determination was evident as the Orange clad harriers loped through the tough, hilly 3.1 miles of various terrain."It's a big day for all of our (fall) sports programs," said the school's athletic director Scott Zoscin. He looked over the hill and watched the soccer team engaged in a battle, but his mind and heart were thinking about Kiddish.Meanwhile, Paul Schertrumpf, who has taken over as the Weatherly coach, watched and raced up and down part of course as the host coach. "There's a lot more to do," he said as he helped try to keep pace with the scoring for both gender races. In the final tabulation, it was the Marian girls and boys winning the races. The Fillies captured the top four spots in downing Weatherly 16-41 and topping Minersville 26-29. The Wreckers also fell against the Battlin' Miners 17-42.On the boys side, the Wreckers breezed by Minersville 15-50, but were usurped by the Colts 21-36. Marian also posted a shutout over Minersville, 15-50."Our kids ran with a lot of heart today," said Schertrumpf. "Sure we wanted to win both (races), but hey, Marian has some fantastic runners."The overall winner from the guys didn't come from either of the aforementioned teams, instead Tri-Valley's lone entrant, Wayne Reilly, took that honor by posting a time of 18:53. Second in the boys run was Marian's Aaron Srinivasan in a time of 19:25, just three seconds ahead of teammate Simon Wagner. They were followed by two other Colt runners - Eddie Pulaski (19:52) and Henry Kreisl (20:01).After those runners hit the finish line, it was a trio of Weatherly runners finishing in succession as Anthony Maguschak ((20:12), Nick Berger and Joel Hinkle (20:42) collected valuable scoring points for the Wreckers."I enjoyed the run today," said Maguschak. "It was a great day to run, the sun was warm, and it really doesn't affect the way I run. Some runners prefer it to be cooler… I can run no matter what the temperature."Srinivasan agreed."I thought the conditions were ideal," he said. "The track ran a little hard at times, and the hills can get to you… but I'm used to it, this is like our home course."It was a nice run for the much ballyhooed Marian girls, led by sisters Tina and Nicole Capparell.Tina was back for only her third run of the campaign after battling an iron deficiency. Her time of 20:37 was off her normal pace, as she looks to regain her full strength."It's a tough course, and I really can't run (well) in the heat," said the older Capparell. "With the iron deficiency, the heat takes a lot out of me. I just have to continue to take pills and my body tells me how much I can run."Tom Kostic, one of the great cross country coaches for decades at the now defunct Bishop Hafey High School, is back steering the train for Marian, and was pleased with the performance of both of his teams."I really thought we ran well," said Kostic. "Everyone is getting stronger as we get to the end of the season. I like the way we are running in both the boys and girls."BOYSMarian 15, Minersville 50Marian 21, Weatherly 36Weatherly 15, Minersville 501. Wayne Reilly (TV) 18:53; 2. Aaron Srinivasan (M) 19:25; 3.
