Tamaqua school district

Upgrades have been approved for an elementary school in the Tamaqua Area School District.

On an 8-0 vote, the school board on Tuesday agreed to spend $17,580 for the installation of four exterior aluminum doors and hardware. Director Daniel Schoener was absent.Superintendent Ray Kinder said the district was pleased with the price, adding that the project was initially expected to cost much more.Other businessIn other action, the board:• Adopted the policy related to naloxone.• Approved the first reading of a policy related to adding guidelines to utilize when making decisions regarding advancing students in specific subjects or full grades designed more for the grades 3-8 population.• Approved Assistant Superintendent Stephen Toth as homeless liaison and foster care liaison.• Appointed John Hurst, business administrator for the Mahanoy City School District, as the district's second alternate on the Act 32 Tax Collection Commission. The primary delegate will continue to be business manager Connie Ligenza, while the first alternate will continue to be board President Larry Wittig.• Approved a two-year contract with PSEA Health and Welfare Fund Vision Program, effective Jan. 1, 2017, through Dec. 31, 2018.• Approved a one-year contract with CMS Medical Care Corporation for the purpose of providing the mandated dental exams during the 2016-17 school year. The rate of $9 per exam and a $50 per day surcharge remains unchanged.• Authorized Portnoff Law Associates to schedule the list of properties presented for Sheriff's Sale.• Approved the 2017-18 Intermediate Unit 29 school calendar.• Announced the board's reorganization meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 6.
