Crews knock down brush fire

Towamensing Township fire crews quickly extinguished a brush fire behind the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Lehighton.

An emergency call came in around noon Tuesday that a brush fire was spreading quickly.Fire Chief Jeremy Haydt of the Towamensing Township Volunteer Fire Company said the fire started in a burn barrel, and burned about a quarter of an acre of the wooded area in an L-shape. His crews restricted the fire and put it out before it could spread any farther."With the winds and the dry conditions, people need to refrain from burning brush and garbage," Haydt said.His crews have responded to two brush fires in three days."The conditions are perfect for something to set fire," he said.The drought watch has recently been upgraded to a drought warning, he said. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection declared a drought warning on Nov. 8 for Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe and Northampton counties.Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company assisted at the scene.
