Eldred adopts new fire ordinance

In an effort to tie up loose ends, the Eldred Township Board of Supervisors has adopted a new ordinance granting the township the right to make the rules and regulations for fire companies operating within the township.

The ordinance names the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company as the only fire company permitted to organize within the township. The ordinance also permits the board to annually approve of both the fire chief and the fire company president during the township's annual reorganization meeting in January. The ordinance is not meant to interfere with any mutual aid agreements entered into by the fire company. The township also agreed to a resolution by which the supervisors submitted a letter to the Aquashicola/Pohopoco Watershed Conservancy in support of the designation of the Aquashicola Creek as creek of Exceptional Value. The creek is currently designated as a High Quality stream.Supervisors JoAnn Bush and Gary Hoffman voted in favor of the letter. Chairwoman Mary Anne Clausen voted no, but only because Clausen felt that a public meeting with landowners whose property borders the stream should take place.Hoffman argued that since the letter was only a show of support for the action being taken by the conservancy that a public meeting at the township level was not necessary. As a high quality water body, any future development along the stream, which could impact its quality would have to be determined to be in the public interest. As a stream of exceptional value, no development that would impact the stream's water quality is permitted. The township also approved its 2017 municipal budget for advertising. The budget is balanced with total income and expenditures of $959,352. No millage increase is being proposed.Duane Moyer Well Drilling supplied the township with a letter indicating that they had properly sealed all of the wells Nestle Waters had drilled on the Gower property. However, well number 8 was not included on the list.A meeting is planned for Tuesdayat Polk Township to discuss the future of Carney Road.Polk Township, which controls the bulk of the road, would like to limit truck traffic along the roadway and has asked Eldred to consider its proposal.
