$77K raised during telethon

The Blue Ridge Chapter of Dream Come True raised $77,285 during its annual telethon held Sunday night at Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe.

Hosted by George Roberts, Dr. Ed Miller, Nick Hawkey and Kristal Nemeroff, the four-hour event featured check presentations, entertainment and, most importantly, appearances from dream recipients.Emily Brong of Palmerton visited Walt Disney World in November 2015 through Dream Come True.Brong was seriously injured in a car crash on Jan. 19, 2014, in Franklin Township.On Sunday, she brought a tablet with photos from her trip and used an electronic device to describe her excitement."I really enjoyed the time with my family and swimming with the dolphins," Brong said of her trip to Florida.Emily's brother Erik is still deciding on his dream, but would like a chance to meet the Dallas Cowboys football team.Erik was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 6 years old."I was tested and my sugar was extremely high," he said. "I use a pump that provides insulin to my body."Dream Come True fulfilled a Disney trip for Calee Starr, who said she met all the princesses including her favorite, Rapunzel."I also enjoyed going to the pool," she said Sunday.Check presentations rolled in throughout the evening.Among those donating was Wayne Halliday and the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert, which raised $17,143 at its annual United Dream Ride.The largest donation came via the Hunter Wolfe Memorial Golf Tournament, which raised $20,000. Tony Wolfe's son, Hunter, was just shy of his 13th birthday when he passed away from leukemia.Al Warner organizes an annual Dream Come True bike run in Bath. The event brought in $6,700 for the Blue Ridge chapter."We're pleased with what we can contribute," Warner said. "It's all for the kids."Dream Come True's sausage stand at the Palmerton Community Festival raised $6,123.88, while the Tupperware bingo event raised $3,123.35.Steve Ohl presented a $1,650 check from the annual Carbon County Oktoberfest event.The 2016 Dream Maker Award recipients are West End Fire Company, Stacy Halliday, Gerald "Butch" Borger Jr., Joey B's Bar and Restaurant, Hal's Plumbing and Heating, Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 927, 903 Landscape Supply, Darlene Brotzman and the Scott Antrim family.Tommy Zito, Dance With Kim, Jupiters Arrow, Elizabethtown College a cappella group "Vocalign," Erin Kelly and Lynn DeHaven, George Roberts and family, Kristal Nemeroff, Large Flowerheads, Chris Eckert and Leigh Pollari, and Royal Jam Music provided the night's entertainment."This is a great event and a great organization," said Nemeroff, a telethon co-host and past dream recipient."The dreams help children forget about the doctor's appointments and everything else they are going through for a while. I'm so proud of our community and how they've stepped up tonight in support."
