Driver facing DUI after Tamaqua crash

A Tamaqua man faces charges after an accident on Oct. 21 that damaged a building and Jet Skis at Thorn's Cycles, 615 N. Railroad St., Tamaqua.

Officers were called to the cycle shop at 9:09 p.m. and found a black Chevrolet Cavalier that had struck a trailer with multiple Jet Skis on board. The Jet Skis were then pushed into the building. The driver of the Cavalier was identified as Gary James Brode, 56, of 166 Penn St., who had been driving south on Route 309 and missed the curve coming in to Tamaqua. Despite a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and a 16-ounce can of Coors Light found in the car, Brode insisted he hadn't been drinking. He then admitted to "drinking earlier in the day."He declined medical attention and was given field sobriety tests, which he failed. Brode was then given a preliminary breath test, which registered a .249 percent blood alcohol content, three times the legal limit of .08.Charges are pending the results of blood tests taken at Lehigh Valley Medical Center-South Jackson Street, Pottsville.
