Slatington Memorial Day services

On Sunday, the Slatington American Legion Post 16 will hold memorial services at outlying cemeteries in the area. Leaving the post home at 8 a.m., the following schedule of cemeteries will be visited: 8:10 a.m. Williamstown Cemetery; 8:40 a.m. Jacksonville Cemetery; 9:15 a.m. New Tripoli UCC; 9:45 Heidelberg UCC; 10:15 a.m. Neff’s Lutheran Cemetery; 11:45 a.m. Presbyterian Church Cemetery; and 12:05 p.m. Veterans Memorial at Main and Second Street. Then, back at the post home where the Auxiliary will hold a dinner for Legionnaires, Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion and Legion Riders who participated in honoring their fallen comrades.

On Monday, leaving the post home at 8 a.m. and arriving at 8:05 a.m. Washington Catholic Cemetery; 8:30 a.m. Slatedale Cemetery; 8:50 a.m. Trout Creek Covered Bridge at 5 N. Seventh St., Slatington, where flower petals will be scattered in the creek in remembrance of all the veterans lost at sea. Then back to the post home to form the parade in Slatington at 9:30 a.m.

This will be the 98th consecutive Memorial Day parade.

The parade will start at 10 a.m. at Main and Second Street and proceed to Union Cemetery for services starting at 10:30 a.m. The main speaker will be Rear Adm. David W. Kunkel.

In case of inclement weather, the services will be held at the Baptist Church, 509 Main St., Slatington, starting at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend the parade and services.

The National Moment of Remembrance, established by Congress, asks Americans wherever they are at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day to pause in an act of national unity for a duration of one minute. The time was chosen because it is the time when most Americans are enjoying their freedoms on the national holiday.
