Jim Thorpe inductees are Foster, Kanick, McElmoyle

The Carbon County Area Hall of Fame banquet will be held Sunday, May 29 at Memorial Hall in Jim Thorpe. The doors will open at 1 p.m.

For children under 12 the cost is $15.Following are members of the 2016 Jim Thorpe Hall of Fame class.FARLEY FOSTERFarley Foster, a 1977 Jim Thorpe graduate, was an outstanding wrestler who lettered all four years (1974-77) and established the record for most career wins on the mat.In his freshman year while competing in the 98-pound class, Foster went 9-8-2 against predominantly AAA and AAAA competition and took third place in the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament.During his sophomore season, his record was 10-7-2 while wrestling 112 pounds.. He again was a third-place finisher at the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament, won the "sectionals" with two pins, and advanced to the semifinals of districts.That sophomore year, he was named the varsity MVP and won the "Takedown Club Award" and the "Iron Man Award."Foster, during his junior season, was elected team captain, wrestled at 126 pounds and had a 15-4 record. He finished second at the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament, won "sectionals" again, copped third place at districts and was named varsity MVP.As a senior he capped off his brilliant career with a 19-3 record, including 14 pins. During the season, he had a string of 10 consecutive falls. Two of his losses were by one point and the third loss came in overtime.He was a second-place finisher in the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament, won the "sectionals", was crowned the District 11 champion at 132 pounds and placed fourth at Regionals. He was selected MVP and won the C & D Award (given to the school's top wrestler).Foster is the only district wrestling champion in the 33 years of Jim Thorpe wrestling history. He was the first three-time MVP and first three-time sectionals champ. In 76 matches, he suffered only two pins (both coming his freshman year) and recorded 31 pins.The majority of his matches were against AAA and AAAA competition, which makes his record even more impressive. He not only excelled at wrestling but also on the football field where he played halfback for the Olympians and received varsity letters in 1976 and 1977.Farley attended and graduated "Cum Laude" from East Stroudsburg University in 1981 with a B.S. in Environmental Studies. He coached wrestling at Jim Thorpe from 1986-89. Currently he lives in Jim Thorpe with his family and is co-worker of Foster-Kmetz Woodworking.TRICIA MCELMOYLE KANICKTricia McElmoyle Kanick is a 2005 graduate of Marian. She excelled as a tri-sport athlete in basketball as a 1,000-point scorer, softball as a three-year starter, and a four-year letter winner with the track and field team.McElmoyle Kanick scored 1,251 points on the hardwood during her basketball career. She earned second-team all-state during her junior year, and first-team all-state her senior season. McElmoyle Kanick played in two state championships (2003, 2005) for the Fillies. She was apart of two Eastern championship teams, participated in four Eastern finals, and was a two-time Schuylkill League champion (2004, 2005).McElmoyle Kanick earned countless accolades during her basketball career.She was named twice as both the Times News and Pottsville Republican Player of the Year (2004, 2005), the Hazelton Standard Speaker Player of the Year (2005), the Reading Eagle Player of the Year (2005), and the TV13 Female Athlete of the Season.Tricia continued her education and basketball career at Kutztown University and graduated in 2010 with a dual-degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. She then earned her Master's degree from Wilkes University in 2013.She has been actively involved as a coach over the past few years. Tricia was the assistant varsity basketball coach at Jim Thorpe from 2010-12, coached both J.V. softball and field hockey at Palmerton, and is currently an assistant varsity girls basketball coach at Tamaqua.Tricia stays active by participating in area basketball and volleyball leagues, as well as running multiple half-marathons and local 5Ks.She currently resides in Lehighton with her husband, Tony, and is employed by the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit and Homestead Family Services.TERRY M. MCELMOYLEMcElmoyle, a Jim Thorpe native and 1972 graduate of Marian High School, was a point guard and defensive standout on the Marian hardwood under head coach Bob Fulton.During his freshman and sophomore campaigns, he played on teams that were undefeated. As a junior, McElmoyle was a key member of the PCIAA state championship team that defeated St. Basile of Pittsburgh in the finals. As a senior, McElmoyle was a key member of the Colts' Anthracite League championship team that again took a deep run into the state playoffs.McElmoyle was also a four-year member of the Marian football team, coached by Joe Leonzi. As a junior, he led the team in rushing and scoring while helping Marian post its first winning season since 1963. McElmoyle was one of the leading passers and rushers in the area during his junior season. As a senior, he was the captain of the team while assuming responsibilities as a quarterback, punter, kicker, and defensive back. He helped lead the Colts to a 8-2 season and was selected to numerous local all-star teams. Following the season, he earned many awards, including the Panther Valley P&B trophy.After graduation, McElmoyle attended Lehigh Community College. He stayed active playing basketball in the Jim Thorpe Civic League and also participated in adult football and softball leagues. McElmoyle stayed involved in the Jim Thorpe community by coaching T-ball, Little League baseball and softball, biddy leagues, CYO, AAU BAsketball, and Knee hi football.McElmoyle is married to the former Mary Kattner for 42 years and has four children: Terry, Tracy, Shaun (Pete), and Tricia. He also has four grandchildren. McElmoyle is currently employed as the Jim Thorpe tax collector and is an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
