Senior building gets roof

Schuylkill County's Office of Senior Services will have a new $197,740 roof over its head thanks to a 2008 energy savings contract.

County commissioners on Wednesday approved an amendment to the agreement with McClure Company of Harrisburg, a subsidiary of PPL.Work to replace the roof with one guaranteed to last 30 years is expected to start soon. The September 2008 agreement guaranteed the county would save $3.6 million over 15 years by replacing boilers, a hot water heater, and lighting fixtures in three county-owned buildings: the courthouse, the prison and the then-county-owned nursing home. The lighting upgrades were expected to account for the largest portion of cost savings, commissioners said at the time.In other matters, commissioners approved plans to publish notices of public hearings for 2016 Community Development Block Grant projects in West Penn Township. The hearings are to gather ideas from residents about what projects they'd like to see done in the township. Also on Wednesday, Paul Fetterolf of Butler Township was hired as Public Works director as of June 1.Fetterolf, is currently serving as interim director. He'll earn $48,000 as director. Fetterolf replaces William Liptok, who retired. The commissioners' May 11 public meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at Blue Mountain High School, 1076 W. Market St., Schuylkill Haven.
