SHINE derby car races set

The hill near Carbon Career & Technical Institute in Jim Thorpe will be turned into a racetrack on Saturday morning.

The Carbon, Schuylkill and Luzerne SHINE Career Academy Afterschool programs will be showcasing the cars they built by competing in derby-style relay races with the vehicles.Students will arrive at CCTI at 9 a.m. and the races begin at 10 a.m.The event is unique in that the centers each constructed its own restraint and brake system for the body of a drivable derby car as a project.Rachel Strucko, director of the Carbon and Schuylkill SHINE Afterschool program, said that 51 students from the Carbon sites have been working on the car for the past six week.Participating in the event include students from all five school districts in Carbon County, as well as the centers from the Wilkes-Barre Area, Hanover Area, Greater Nanticoke Area, Wyoming Valley West and Hazleton Area school districts in Luzerne.Awards will be given out at a picnic lunch following the races.
