Indians eliminate Marian

PINE GROVE - It's difficult to defeat a team that doesn't have to put the ball in play to produce runs.

Millersburg fit that mold during Thursday's PIAA Class A quarterfinal contest with Marian.A terrifying tally of 10 walks and three hit-batsmen produced 13 base runners for the Indians, which ultimately doomed Marian during a 10-4 defeat to Millersburg at Walter Stump Stadium."They did an outstanding job today of battling with two strikes and not going down," said Millersburg head coach Corey Keim. "That's a quality (Marian) team over there. Unfortunately, for them, they gave us a few too many opportunities and we were able to capitalize."The Indians' big fifth inning included six runs on just one base hit. Millersburg walked five times (three with the bases full), scored on an infield error, and received a double from Austin Lehman that drove in a pair of runs and made the score 9-2.Lehman's double in the fifth wasn't a fluke. He led off the game in the first inning with a double and came around to score, as his team put up a quick two-spot on the scoreboard. Lehman finished the afternoon with three hits, two runs scored, and a trio of RBIs."On the way up here, we said all we need to do is put up a few runs in the first inning to give us some confidence and our fans something to cheer about," Lehman explained. "All season, we haven't been patient enough. Obviously, we definitely were today. As you can see, that pays off in the end, because you can't win without scoring."Marian responded in the second inning. The Colts drew a pair of leadoff walks. After a textbook Josh Inama sacrifice bunt, Joe Nahas smacked a single, which drove in two runs and made the score a manageable 3-2 deficit.Unfortunately for the Colts, they didn't remain as patient at the plate as their counterpart throughout the remainder of the game."When the game got close, we got a little antsy," explained Marian head coach Tony Radocha. "We're a free-swinging team and we got a little excited. We tried to do too much. This is a big moment, they were so juiced that I think the adrenaline just took over."In games past, those balls dropped in and were hit to the gaps. Today they just didn't drop in."Dante Salerno led off the bottom of the fifth inning, beating out an infield single for his 100th career hit as a Colt. He came around to score one of two Marian runs in the frame."We're a team that never says die," Radocha said. "We just kept saying 'let's put together some at-bats'. We needed to hit the ball and make them make the plays, but we were just hitting it right at people. We couldn't get that big break or big timely hit."Marian didn't have enough firepower and time to catch the Indians. The Colts chipped away with their pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Indians immediately tagged on an insurance run in the top of the sixth that extended their lead to 10-4.Millersburg pitcher Christian Wingard, who tossed a complete game, was able to pitch loosely and confidently with the large lead to close out the Colts."His pitch count was tremendous compared to the last two outings," the Millersburg coach explained. "He went nine-full last time in the district title game. He was economical today, and they (Marian) helped him once in a while."I tip my hat to them (Marian), they were gentlemen-like, it was a pleasure."TIGHT ZONE… The strike zone was minuscule on Thursday. Neither pitcher received any corner calls, which led to a ton of free passes-both managers had similar reactions.Keim said, "The umpire was not giving anything off the corners. I would argue that if it's not totally white (the ball catching the plate), it wasn't a strike today. That helped us, which played into our discipline." Radocha added, "We're a pitching staff that relies on getting the corners, and we just weren't getting them tonight. Take nothing away from Millersburg though, they took advantage of it."HIGH PRAISE …A passionate and emotional Radocha gave his 2016 team a big shout out after the loss to the Indians. "In my mind, this is probably the best baseball team that ever walked through Marian Catholic High School. Today is a hard pill to swallow, but as the days come and the sadness wears off, we will remember the good moments - the division championship, the district title, the league championship, and getting to play two games in the state tournament."OLD FRIENDS… Keim was an assistant coach to a handful of Marian players during their years of travel ball with the U13-14 area team.Millersburg 210 061 0 - 10 7 3Marian 020 020 0 - 4 7 2Wingard and Shomper; Schmidt, Salerno (5), Evitts (5) and Snerr.
