Man charged after chase

A Palmerton man faces numerous charges after he led police during a high-speed chase Saturday afternoon.

David Canham, 36, of 611 Franklin Ave., Apt/Suite 2, is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer; recklessly endangering another person; unauthorized use of automobiles and other vehicles; driving while suspended DUI related; and reckless driving.Canham is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. June 8 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton. He remains free in lieu of $50,000 unsecured bail.According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman Shawn Leadbetter of the Palmerton Police Department:Leadbetter was monitoring traffic at 4:08 p.m. at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Mauch Chunk Road when he saw Canham driving a black Jeep Grand Cherokee.Leadbetter knew that Canham has a suspended driver's license from New Jersey for a previous DUI conviction.Canham's estranged wife reported to police two weeks earlier that her white 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee was being driven by Canham without consent. The black jeep that Canham was driving looked to be recently spray-painted black, and Leadbetter saw a female passenger in the front passenger seat of the car.Leadbetter attempted to stop him at the intersection of Delaware Avenue and the Route 248 East ramp. The driver instead sped up and continued on Route 248 East into Lehigh Township, going through the red light at the intersection of routes 248 and 873.Leadbetter asked the Carbon County Comm Center to notify Lehigh Township Police and Walnutport Borough Police, as Canham continued at a speed of 100 mph, continuing on Route 145 into Walnutport, crossing over the double yellow line and nearly striking several oncoming vehicles.Leadbetter stopped the pursuit for safety reasons. He then lost sight of the vehicle, but later spotted it after it struck a tree at the intersection of Route 145 and Birch Drive in Lehigh Township.Leadbetter drove on Birch Drive to the intersection of Maple Drive, where Canham made a left-hand turn and drove off the roadway at the intersection of Main Street and Birch Drive, drove through two residential backyards, and came to a dead end private driveway along Main Street.Leadbetter ran after Canham, who was wearing a black T-shirt, black pants with a long pony tail and glasses, into a large, heavily-wooded area. The female passenger jumped out of the vehicle onto the pavement.Leadbetter assisted her and notified units, including a K-9 officer from the Northampton Borough Police Department, to search the wooded area. The search ended at 5:30 p.m.Police learned the Jeep was the one reported by Canham's estranged wife as unauthorized use. There was no insurance or registration on the vehicle.
