Summit Hill mini-mart seeks beer license

A mini-mart in Summit Hill is seeking the transfer of a Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board license so it can sell beer.

Miners Market at 128 E. Amidon St. is hoping to obtain the license currently held by Terpstra's Tavern, 501 North St. in Jim Thorpe.Summit Hill Borough Council received a letter from the attorney representing the mini-mart requesting the license transfer.The letter, from Wetzel, Phillips, Rodgers and Falcone of Plains, says the transfer, if approved, would be from Terpstra's Tavern to Miners Beverage LLC.Borough solicitor Michael Greek said he contacted the other law firm and indicated that it didn't properly make the application to the borough.If proper application is made, then a public hearing will have to be held on the request.Besides serving as a mini-mart, Miners Market also sells gasoline.In other business• The council voted 4-1 to accept a bid from C. E. Ankiewicz Construction Excavation Inc. of Mountaintop to replace 11 stormwater inlets on Pine Street (Route 902) at a cost of $119,355.60. The bid is contingent on whether the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will pay for doing curb cuts during a street reconstruction project scheduled for next year between Amidon and Lehigh streets.Ankiewicz was one of two firms that submitted a bid for the project. The other was Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction, which submitted a quote of $193,950.In favor of giving the work to Ankiewicz were Karen Ruzicka, John O'Gurek, Bill Chapman and David Wargo. Council President Michael Kokinda was opposed. Greg Kosciolek and Billy O'Gurek were absent.The council said PennDOT has ordered that the inlets be replaced before the repaving occurs.• The council agreed to purchase a new Ford four-wheel-drive vehicle for the police department at a cost of $39,167 from the Kovatch Corporation in Nesquehoning. A grant will provide $13,700. The vehicle will replace a 1998 Ford Explorer.• Kovatch Corporation was given approval to repair a Ford F550 truck at a cost of $3,818.93.• Borough secretary/treasurer Kira Steber said the rain spouting at the fire department is leaking to the extent that she's concerned about it causing foundation damage. She said she contacted numerous contractors but none got back to her.Ruzicka suggested asking the Service Team in Towamensing Township to submit a price estimate.• The fire department was granted permission to add three flagpoles on a grassy area in front of the Hilltop Community Center. The request was made by Bobby O'Gurek on behalf of the fire department.After the flagpoles are put up, the fire department plans to erect a monument on the site in memory of past fire company members.• No action was taken on making repairs to a generator that services the Municipal Building.O'Gurek said the generator is only about seven years old with about 200 hours on it.Steber said the generator has excessive vibration when it is running. She was advised that such vibration could result in a power surge, which could destroy computers and other electrical items in the borough building.• The Panther Valley Running and Fitness Club was approved to hold a 5K run and walk at 10 a.m. Nov. 12. The event will be sponsored by the Summit Hill American Legion Post.• The council rejected a request by a resident to waive a $25 late fee on a quarterly garbage bill. The resident, who wasn't identified, said they never received an email on the past quarterly bill.Residents can receive bills via email, for which they receive a $2.50 discount, or by mail. They also can pay their bills quarterly or annually.
