A heat advisory is in effect from noon today to 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly said temperatures today will be in the upper 80s but the heat index will approach 100 during mid and late afternoon hours.

The excessive heat will create hazardous conditions and the potential for heat related health issues will be high, especially for the elderly and for those already in poor health.

There is a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms today, mainly late this afternoon and evening. The primary hazard with any storms will be damaging winds and brief heavy rainfall, resulting in poor drainage flooding.

Temperatures will remain near 90 all week.
