Lehighton Band presents summer concert Thursday

The Lehighton Band will present its second of three summer concerts at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Lehighton Park Amphitheater.

The music for this concert is light and enjoyable, and as always, the concerts are free to the public. The concert will begin with the march "Old Comrades" by Carl Teike. It is a German military march and has been a favorite march for members of the band for many years. The band will continue with a light overture-style song by Ralph Hermann titled "Nocturne in a Modern Manner."Adding to the eclectic style of the concert, the band will then play the "Italian Polka" by Sergei Rachmaninoff. From there, "Carnegie Anthem" will follow, paying tribute to Carnegie Hall, one of the most famous concert venues in the world. It also illustrates the brilliance and excitement of New York City. The next march will be "Charter Oak March" by Eric Osterling. The band dedicates the march to the memory of Raymond Hontz, who was a loyal member of the band until he passed away earlier this year.Just as it is now, the drug epidemic was a concern back in 1981. It was then that NBC and McDonald's went together to create programming urging youth to say no to drugs. The song "Being Yourself" featured many celebrities singing encouraging words to teens and adults. Celebrities such as Bob Hope, Kathy Lee Crosby, Carol Burnett and many others sang the song that will be featured in the band's concert some 35 years later.Afterward, "Highlights from The Music Man" will be dedicated to the Lehighton Band's director of over 50 years, Paul R. Smith, who passed away in March. This song, as well as the entire 2016 concert season, is dedicated to Smith, whose dedication and passion for music will be impossible to match.Earl Knappenberger, the band's lone euphonium player, will be the featured soloist playing Rodgers' and Hammerstein's "Some Enchanted Evening" from their popular musical, "South Pacific."Rounding out the concert will be the traditional "You're a Grand Old Flag," a peppy concert piece titled "Curtain Call," and John Philip Sousa's march "King Cotton."The Lehighton Band is under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall, Sixth and Cypress streets, Lehighton.A freewill offering will be accepted.
