No. Valley claims LVL title

OREFIELD - Ben Cordova doesn't get mad. He gets even.

The Northern Valley pitcher got revenge against South Parkland by beating the No. 2 seed in the Lehigh Valley Legion championship game, 4-3, at Parkland High School. It avenges a loss he suffered to the Trojans in Friday's winners bracket final and sends his team to this weekend's Region 2 Tournament in Quakertown.Cordova bounced back from Friday's 7-6 loss and was ready to go after his team beat South Parkland Sunday to force Monday's winner-take-all game."After the game I was pretty down," he said. "My coach said to me 'We're going to get back to that point and you're going to get the ball for the last game.' He let me know I was going to have it and I was looking forward to it since then."Pitching on just two days rest, Cordova allowed just six hits in Monday's title game. He struck out two and allowed just one earned run. He pitched through a pair of errors in the third inning that allowed the Trojans to take a 3-2 lead."When we lost on Friday, we made errors behind him, and he started pressing," said Northern Valley head coach Brad Rauch. "He didn't want to relive Friday. He didn't lose his focus."Northern Valley had lost three straight games to the Trojans before Sunday. They lost both regular-season meetings against South Parkland and dropped Friday's game, their first of three postseason meetings.Carrying momentum from Sunday's win, the Chargers opened a 2-0 lead Monday with runs in the first two innings.John Taylor reached base on an error in the first inning. He moved to third on Kole Rodrigues' single and scored on a passed ball for the game's first run.Evan Meixsell led off the Northern Valley second inning with a single and scored on Josh Williamson's RBI single for a 2-0 lead. The Trojans went ahead in the third inning after they loaded the bases on a walk, a hit and an error. Dylan Peiffer's RBI single brought in two runs and tied the game. South Parkland got a third run on the Chargers' second error of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. But Cordova retired two of the next three batters to keep his team within a run. Rauch made a visit to the mound after the third run scored, but he didn't want to talk to his pitcher."I went out to talk to the guys behind him," he said. "I made [Cordova] walk away. He didn't need to hear that we made errors. I told them we play seven innings for a reason. You can have an inning where you lose your focus, as long as you come back from that and stay positive. They did."The Chargers took the lead in the fifth inning when Rodriguez and Cordova drew one-out walks before Tyler Wiik was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Trojans pulled starter Matt Mellinger, and sent in Peiffer to get out of the jam. He might have gotten out of it if not for a throwing error that allowed two Northern Valley runs to score."We made a couple throwing errors that cost us some runs and that really hurt us," said South Parkland head coach Tommy Kahn. "We beat them the first three and we lost the wrong two. That's baseball though. It's hard to beat a good team four or five times in a row, that's for sure."Pitching with the lead again, Cordova allowed just two hits over the final three innings and didn't allow a Trojan past first base after the third inning. It was his second revenge win in two weeks as he beat the Carbon County Monarchs in a late-season game to avenge an earlier loss.BATTLING CHARGERS ...
