1991: Lehighton VFW Auxiliary meeting

The Ladies Auxiliary of Lehighton Post 256, veterans of Foreign wars, met at the post home recently with President Jean Eremus presiding.It was announced that the May poppy sale was a great success. Plans were announced about the membership drive to take place during August and September.It was also noted by Eremus that cancer grants have been granted to local members who qualify. The amount of each cancer grant was recently increased across the board as well.A new member, Doris Evans, was introduced and accepted into the auxiliary. Delegates and alternates were elected for the department and the national convention.It was reported the Voice of Democracy Essay winners from Lehighton Area High School received their prizes from the auxiliary during a recent LAHS awards assembly.First-place winner Jennifer Frantz was awarded an engraved plaque, a savings bond and a certificate.Second-place winner Amanda Steigerwalt was awarded a savings bond and certificate.Third-place winner Lisa Steigerwalt received a cash award and a certificate.The auxiliary also awarded Nancy Mendson, LAHS English Department teacher, a special gift of appreciation for having helped to coordinate the event.The charter was draped in memory of departed auxiliary sister, Anna Mae Snyder, who passed away in April.
