Marian grad survives car crash; two college classmates killed

A 19-year-old Tamaqua area woman, a passenger in a car involved in a fatal crash Monday night in La Plume Township, underwent surgery Tuesday in the Geisinger Community Medical Center.

Kaylee Ceci, a graduate of Marian Catholic High School and a student at Keystone College in Lackawanna County, was listed in good condition Tuesday night.

Ceci was a passenger in a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt operated by Tashandra Burton, 19, of Wilkes-Barre. The students were traveling east on route 6/11, when Burton lost control, crossed over the grass median and entered the westbound lane. The Chevy struck a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta being operated by Joshua Zilla, 20, also a Keystone student, according to Pennsylvania State Police, who are investigating.

Burton and her front seat passenger, Michael Burkhardt, 19, of Waymart, were both pronounced dead shortly after arrival at GCMC. Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland ruled both deaths as accidental from multiple traumatic injuries.

Two other passengers in the Burton car, Allison Berman, 18, of Wikes-Barre and Emily Fardoulis, 19, of Smyrna, Delaware, were hospitalized in critical condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.
