Update: Snowstorm Jonas

Snow continues to fall at a heavy and fast past in Carbon and Schuylkill counties.

Overnight totals of one foot or more will be augmented by an additional 8 to 12 inches of snow through Saturday night

The National Weather Service expects up to 30 inches go snow to clobber Schuykill County, according to its latest update at 4 a.m. today.

John Matz of the county Emergency Management Agency said in an 8 a.m. update that there had been no major incidents, but that "driving conditions remain treacherous."

"If you must travel, please be cautious and allow ample time," he said.

"There is currently fire police and law enforcement activity in Rush Township at Route 309 above Route 54 because of vehicles slippery conditions and immobile vehicles."

So far, Frackville, Girardville, Mahanoy City, Pine Grove, Ringtown Saint Clair, and Schuylkill Haven boroughs have declared states of emergency, as has the City of Pottsville.

In Carbon and Monroe counties, the National Weather Service expects 12 to 18 inches of snow to fall through the day today before tapering off late tonight and Sunday.

Wind gusts will cause blowing and drifting, and people are urged to stay indoors and off the roads.

The winds and snow accumulations on branches and power lines translate into power outages.

PPL's Outage Center reports that as of 9:35 a.m., 65 customers were out of power in Tobyhanna, 1,051 in Northampton Borough, and one in Pine Grove Township.

The state Department of Transportation is restricting certain vehicles from I-78, I-81 and I-176 in east central Pennsylvania.

The ban is aimed at keeping the interstates open during the storm. When conditions improve, PennDOT will remove the travel restrictions.

The types of vehicles prohibited from traveling on the interstate highways are empty straight trucks; large combination vehicles (tandem trailers and doubles); tractors hauling empty trailers; trailers pulled by passenger vehicles; motorcycles; and recreational vehicles.
