Slatington firefighters hold annual fund drive

The Slatington Fire Department has started its biggest fund drive of the year. Every winter the fire department uses Municipal Marketing in Pittsburgh to mail borough residents arequest for donations. The amounts vary from $30 up to $75 for the department located at 524 W. Church St.

"Last year we raised close to $17,000," firefighter Jason Nicholas said."The borough's tax base isn't big enough to support the department on its own so we do a lot of fundraising," he said.Residents who receive a water/sewer bill will receive the mailer that includes a brief new letter on the importance ofcarbon monoxide detectors and establishing a fire escape plan.According to the letter every room should have two means of emergency escape. An exit route out of the house without opening a bedroom door is important, along with a planned meeting place outside of the residence once everyone is safely out of the structure.Increased training demands and equipment costs have caused the department to need more donations. The department recently hosted a wing night at the Vigilant Fire Hall to raise funds. The annual bike and car show in memory of Milton "Bup" Green has been moved to Sept. 24, for this year after the downpouraffected turnout last August. To donate or for more information, call 610-767-2424.
