Schuylkill Twp. honors former supervisor

Preparing to reorganize for 2016, the Schuylkill Township board of supervisors paused to remember the service of a former member, now departed.

A tribute to Joseph A. Zelinsky preceded Monday's reorganizational and regular meetings held at the municipal building, 75 Walnut St., Mary D.Zelinsky of Broad Street, Tuscarora, passed away on May 10, 2015, at the age of 73.He worked in the construction business and served in the U.S. Marine Corps, bringing those experiences to the table during his tenure on the board in the 1980s and beyond. It was a time of many improvements in the township, including establishing many rules and guidelines still being followed today."He served for 12 years," said Charles Fayash, newly elected board chairman.Zelinsky also is remembered as drummer for the 1960s group the Chevelles. He was the husband of the former Mary Ann (Pedron) Zelinsky, and the couple was married for 46 years. His widow was on hand to accept a plaque in his honor, along with daughter Jolene DiMarco and grandchildren Nicholas DiMarco and Anna Zelinsky.Jolene DeMarco said another daughter, Cheryl Zelinsky, was unable to attend the meeting but is equally proud of their father's legacy.During reorganization, Fayash assumed chairmanship; Charles Hosler was named vice chairman; Frank Fabrizio, supervisor; Natasha Tyson, secretary and treasurer; Frank DiMarco, police chief; and Tony Stanell, officer.Former supervisor and Mary D resident Christine Verdier requested that the board allow public comment before making announcements of position appointments, per Section 701 of state code.Verdier also questioned the supervisors about a recent meeting."Was there a meeting called last Monday to plan for this meeting?" asked Verdier.Getting an affirmative response from the board, Verdier said that particular meeting was, essentially, a violation of the Sunshine Act.The charge resulted in lengthy discussion pertaining to the general practices of current and past boards."I've shared information in your packets so that you may read up so that you're not in violation," said Verdier.
