First elected female DA sworn in

The first elected female district attorney for Carbon County took her oath of office Monday during the annual swearing-in ceremonies in courtroom one of the county courthouse in Jim Thorpe.

Jean A. Engler was administered the oath of office by Judge Joseph J. Matika, who noted that he had a long working relationship with Engler when he was an assistant district attorney before being elected a judge.Engler, however, is no stranger to the office or its responsibilities. She has served as district attorney since last August when longtime DA, Gary F. Dobias, retired after over 25 years of service. As first assistant DA, Engler, a Democrat, was elevated to the top position according to state law.She won election to her own four-year term last November, defeating Republican Adam Weaver.She became an assistant district attorney in 1989 and became first assistant DA in 2014. A lifelong resident of the county, she lives in Jim Thorpe.She is the daughter of the late attorney W. Joseph and Mary Engler and has four siblings, John, and attorneys Joseph, Jane and Joan. She is a graduate of Marian Catholic High School in Tamaqua, Villanova Unversity and Villanova University School of Law, Philadelphia.
