Tigers reach CL semis

ALLENTOWN ‑- Northwestern head coach Jason Zimmerman has been on a rollercoaster ride the past couple of days. And he's hoping that ride continues for his Tiger softball team this week.

Just hours after his fiancé gave birth to their first child, Zimmerman was back on the field guiding Northwestern to a win in the Colonial League tournament. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and earned a 5-2 victory over Salisbury in the quarterfinal round on Saturday morning at Pates Park."My son was born yesterday [Friday], and I came right here from the hospital," Zimmerman said. "These girls came out ready to go. The emotions are high."Northwestern's confidence is also high. It was the second time in six days that the Tigers defeated Salisbury, and the win positions Northwestern against top-seeded Bangor in the semifinals back at Pates Park on Tuesday."We didn't have our starting pitcher [Lydia Danner] the last time we played Bangor," Zimmerman said. "It's a little bit of a shot at revenge. Hopefully we can keep this thing rolling."No one arguably had a more dominant performance than Danner against Salisbury. Other than allowing two runs (one unearned) on three hits in the fifth inning that allowed Salisbury to cut Northwestern's lead to 3-2, Danner was nearly perfect. She allowed just three hits in the other six frames.Danner and the Tigers wasted no time in responding to Salisbury's burst of offense. After Danner led off the bottom half of the fifth with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Claire O'Dea, Brooke Wehr blasted a two-run homer to centerfield to make it a three-run lead again."That was big because I was anxious the first couple of at-bats," Wehr said after driving a changeup over Salisbury centerfielder Lil Crouthamel. "But then I got a good pitch to drive.""We talk to the girls all of the time that errors and those kinds of things are going to happen," Zimmerman said. "But you have to count on your teammates that they're able to come back from that and bring us back out of it."While those two runs certainly padded Northwestern's lead to a comfortable margin, Danner would have had enough support after the first two innings when Northwestern went ahead 3-0.Ellen Smith doubled in the first inning and drove in two runs to make it a quick 2-0 advantage. Danner then knocked in Alyssa Rodda with a single to right field in the second.Salisbury led off the fifth with a double from Peyton Stauffer and a single by Sara Lamana. It was Emily Batman who came through with a single to score Stauffer and get the Falcons on the scoreboard. Lamana crossed home plate on a Tiger error.A CHANCE AT REVENGE ...Tuesday will be the second meeting this season between Bangor and Northwestern. The Tigers will have revenge on their minds after an 11-0 loss to open the season.A STRONG TOP OF THE ORDER ...Danner (two runs, one RBI); Wehr (two runs, two RBIs); and Jess Badman all tallied two hits for the Tigers.Salisbury 000 020 0 - 2 6 0Northwestern 210 020 x - 5 9 2Rogers and Costantini; Danner and Wehr.
