Coroner: Lighter started fire where baby died

A cigarette lighter caused a fire that resulted in the death of a 7-month-old girl in Lehighton.

The fire broke out just before noon Oct. 23 in a multifamily dwelling at 266 S. First St.While the fire was limited to one floor of the home, an infant, Nevah Hoffman, was pronounced dead at the scene.Carbon County Coroner Bob Miller said that after the investigation, it was found that the fire was started with a cigarette lighter."The fire gave off elevated levels of carbon monoxide that were lethal to the baby," Miller said. "The cause of death was carbon monoxide."Miller said the coroner's office ruled it accidental after conferring with the Lehighton Police Department and Pennsylvania State Police.No charges will be filed, Miller said.The fire was originally reported to have started in the third floor of a home that is split into four apartment units. All the residents of the home were displaced. According to the obituary, there were other children at home.The home sustained only minimal damage, as firefighters had the fire under control within about two minutes.The Pennsylvania State Police crime unit, along with detectives, were on scene.Also assisting at the scene were Lehighton Police Department, Franklin Township Fire Department, Mahoning Township Fire Department, Lehighton Ambulance, and the county dog warden. A dog was tied outside when firefighters arrived.
