Blaze displaces Bowmanstown family

A family of four has been displaced from their home after a dwelling fire broke out in Bowmanstown Sunday afternoon.

The fire was reported just after 1 p.m. at the home at 322 White St. after it began in or near the chimney.Bowmanstown Volunteer Fire Co. Fire Chief Michael Spairana said that upon arrival, firefighters had to throw chains down the chimney to knock some of the embers down.Spairana said firefighters emptied the wood-burning stove, took off the stove pipe, and used a small amount of water to extinguish the fire.He said the fire was all contained to the chimney, and took about a half-hour to get under control."There was a lot of smoke from the chimney fire," Spairana said. "We had a lot of concerns there for a while."All four residents were believed to be home at the time of the incident. No injuries were sustained, though the father was shook up, Spairana said."I'd like to express my gratitude to all the fire departments who responded," he said. "I'd like to remind those who burn wood to get their chimneys cleaned and inspected."The American Red Cross was called to the scene and provided immediate financial support to the family, such as hotel accommodations, food, and clothing through financial support, according to Michele Baehr, executive director of the American Red Cross of the Pocono Mountains.Also assisting at the scene were the Parryville Fire Department, Palmerton Fire Department, Aquashicola Fire Department and the Walnutport Response Intervention Team.Area fire police maintained traffic control at the scene.
