Boom rattles Tamaqua

Tamaqua Police are blaming a loud boom and tremor felt area-wide on a man who blew up a Jeep nearby.

Residents took to social media Tuesday to discuss the loud boom and what felt like a tremor at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.Susan Eckhart, who works in the Times News office in Tamaqua, said, “It kind of jarred the building.”She described it as feeling like when a house shakes as thunder booms near it.“I felt the tremor and went to the window to see if a truck hit the building,” Eckhart said.According to police, a man wanted to get rid of the Jeep so he drove it onto coal mine property and added Tannerite, an exploding target used for firearms practice. He shot the Jeep to blow it up.The matter is under investigation.People reported on Facebook that they heard or felt the boom in Andreas, Hometown, Mahanoy City and Lansford.Several reported their windows were shaken by the explosion.
