Tide silences Thorpe

Jim Thorpe's offensive problems were obvious.

Olympian girls basketball coach Rob Kovac said the solution is too. After watching his team turn in its lowest scoring output of the season in a 41-26 Schuylkill League Division I setback to Pottsville, Kovac wasn't hesitant to talk about the problem."We need to get a lot more out of players other than Kayley (Kovac)," coach Kovac said. "We need to do a lot better job of that and that's what we talked about in the locker-room."Against the Tide, only three Olympians had field goals in the game and only Kayley Kovac had more than two.The lack of scoring balance was especially noticable in the first half when Kayley was the lone Jim Thorpe player to score a point. On the other hand, the Tide had no problem sharing the wealth as five different players contributed to the visitors building a 27-8 halftime lead. Lexi Plachko led the way with nine points."When Kayley is getting doubled up, someone else should be scoring more," said coach Kovac. "Payton (Kovac) finally got going in the second half a little bit. But besides that, we didn't get much offense from anybody tonight."Payton Kovac drained two three-pointers in the third quarter as Jim Thorpe finally showed some offensive life and cut Pottsville's advantage to 32-19 heading into the final period. But the Olympians were never able to get any closer as they scored just seven points in the quarter - five from Kayley Kovac, who finish with a team-high 15 pointss.Despite the loss in the Schuylkill League opener, coach Kovac still found positives in the Olympians' performance."We are better than a year ago," Kovac said. "We really are. We showed that in the second half. The first half was bad. It probably was the worst half of basketball we played all season."It would have been easy to quit and we didn't. I will credit my kids with that. Overall, Pottsville beat us. Plain and simple. "SHARED THE WEALTH ... Kyra Schenk led the Tide with a 12 points. Sadie Comfort and Plachko both ended up with nine points.NO SUCH LUCK ... The Olympians were 2-for-10 from the floor in the opening quarter, 2-for-12 in the second, 3-for-13 in the third and 3-for-7 in the fourth to finish with a 10-for-42 (24 percent) shooting performance.TIDE TAKE OPENER ...
