Swift leads way

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Guided by one of the nation's most dynamic players, Philadelphia power St. Joseph's Prep walked away from Hersheypark Stadium on Dec. 10 with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Association Class AAAAAA football title.

It was championship No. 3 in four seasons for Georgia pledge D'Andre Swift and the Hawks. Swift, who rushed for 140 yards and three touchdowns against Pittsburgh Central Catholic in Hershey, guided Gabe Infante's side to an unsuspecting 42-7 victory and capped his final senior with 1,699 rushing yards.Swift, the nation's top-ranked all-purpose back, was named Class 6A player of the year Tuesday with the release of the Pennsylvania Football Writers All-State team. Infante was tabbed coach of the year as the Hawks (14-0) finished ninth in USA Today's Top 25 poll.Senior offensive linemen Carter Lynch and Jackson Evans joined their St. Joseph's Prep teammate on the all-state list. Pittsburgh Central Catholic (14-2), hoping to win its fourth state title, landed junior QB Troy Fisher, senior running back JJ Younger, and three defenders on the team.CLASS 5AFor the fourth time in six seasons, Philadelphia's Archbishop Wood capped its high school football season with a PIAA championship.This time, the Vikings added the state's first Class 5A title with a 37-10 victory over Harrisburg on Dec. 9. Both programs are well represented on the Pennsylvania Football Writers All-State team.Versatile senior athlete Raheem Blackshear, senior wide receiver and Georgia recruit Mark Webb, and senior running back Shawn Thompson are among five players from Archbishop Wood to be selected. Senior defensive end Damion Barber and junior end Micah Parsons lead four Harrisburg players on the team.Record-setting senior running back Zane Dudek of Armstrong was tabbed player of the year after setting the WPIAL single-season rushing mark with 2,936 yards and 37 touchdowns for the River Hawks (9-2). Harrisburg's Calvin Everett earned coach of the year honors.CLASS 4AReigning Class 4A champion Erie Cathedral Prep earned top billing Tuesday with the release of the Pennsylvania Football Writers All-State team.Junior Quarterback Joe Mischler, who guided the Ramblers to a 27-20 come from behind victory over Philadelphia's Imhotep Charter in the Dec. 8 championship, earned player of the year honors.Mischler's father, Prep head coach Mike Mischler, was tabbed coach of the year after becoming the 10th coach in Pennsylvania history to win three or titles. Eight players from Cathedral Prep were selected in all, including a handful that earned distinction for the second straight season.The list includes senior linebacker Jerry Roberts, junior LB and Notre Dame recruit Matt Bauer, and senior defensive linemen Fredrick Scruggs and Dominick Covatto.Senior quarterback Nasir Boykin and junior lineman Justin Johnson headline a talented group from Imhotep Charter.CLASS 3ACentral Martinsburg senior Alex Hoenstine and Beaver Falls head coach Ryan Matsook earned top honors Monday with the release of the Class 3A All-State team.Hoenstine, who established program records for rushing yards (2,480) and touchdowns (43), garnered 3A player of the, senior wide receiver and Georgia recruit Mark Webb, and senior running back Shawn Thompson are among five players from Archbishop Wood to be selected. All-State defensive end and Michigan pledge Donovan Jeter helped Beaver Falls defeat Middletown 30-13 in the season finale on Dec. 10.CLASS 2ASince the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association adopted the mercy rule in 1998, only one high school football program has cleared 15 consecutive wins under a running clock.Senior running back DeWayne Murray and Steel Valley packed them all into one championship season.Murray, Steel Valley's 2,000-yard rusher, and teammate Paris Ford, were among those honored Tuesday on the Pa. Football Writers Class 2A All-State team.Southern Columbia, denied its second straight 2A title and eighth overall, landed a pair of top running backs on the all-state team. Freshman Gaige Garcia and senior Hunter Thomas combined for 3,478 rushing yards and 53 rushing touchdowns for the Tigers.CLASS 1AThis has been a December to remember for Clairton senior Lamont Wade.Only days after adding his name to Penn State's stellar recruiting class of 2017, Wade added Class 1A Player of the Year honors on Monday with the release of the Pennsylvania Football Writers All-State team.Clairton's five-star cornerback became Penn State's 18th commitment on Saturday, choosing the Nittany Lions over Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Tennessee and UCLA. Wade also carried the Bears into another championship weekend in Hershey recently with more than 2,000 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns.Three-time Class A champion Bishop Guilfoyle placed six players on the all-state team, including defensive end Luke Frederick, a University of Delaware recruit, and Harvard-bound linebacker Andrew Irwin.Coach of the Year Justin Wheeler and Bishop Guilfoyle (15-0) defeated Clairton 17-0 in the Class 1A final on Dec. 9.
