Two defendants avoid trials, enter guilty pleas

Two defendants scheduled to go on trial Monday in Carbon County court changed their minds and instead entered into plea bargains with the district attorney's office and entered guilty pleas.

Both entered their pleas before Judge Joseph J. Matika.John Phillip Wagner, 39, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of unauthorized use of an automobile with charges of terroristic threats, simple assault and harassment dropped.He was charged by Lansford police for an incident on Feb. 21. He took a vehiclewithout permission. The other counts involved an incident at a residence along West Abbott Street.Matika sentenced him to serve three months to 181 days in prison with credit for 181 days already served and paroled him. He was also ordered to pay court costs of about $1,000.Kory A. Christman, 38, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count each of driving under the influence and driving under suspension - DUI related.He was arrested on April 4, 2014, along Wintergreen Road in Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed a 0.21 BAC.Sentencing was deferred so Christman can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation and also apply for placement in the Intermediate Punishment Program - house arrest.
