Carbon man assaults two prison guards

A Carbon County inmate currently waiting to move through the county court system on various charges for previous incidents in Lansford and Nesquehoning has found himself in more hot water after he assaulted two prison guards while he was being booked on other charges last month.

Eugene Kochan, 21, of Lansford, faces two counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment following an incident at the Carbon County Correctional Facility during the early morning hours of Nov. 12.According to the affidavit filed by Nesquehoning police patrolman Richard Neikam, prison staff contacted police on Nov. 15 to report the assault. The sergeant reporting the incident told Neikam that he and a corrections officer were assaulted by Kochan, who reportedly struck the two in their heads while he was being booked.Kochan became agitated about being in jail and that he had to give up his shoelaces and a cloth bracelet while being booked on another charge, the affidavit states. The jail supplied written reports along with video footage of the incident at that time. The video showed that at 3:27 a.m., Kochan stood up from the booking room chair and began arguing with the corrections officer before walking into the shower room area.A second camera, located just off the booking room in the showering area, recorded the assault.Kochan was then secured and placed in a booking cell.Neikam interviewed Kochan, who admitted being rude and belligerent because the corrections officer told him he had to cut his sentimental bracelet off. He also said he didn’t remember swinging and only remembers bits and pieces of the incident, the affidavit states.A preliminary arraignment was held before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek in Lansford on Dec. 5 and bail was set at $100,000.A preliminary hearing before Kosciolek has been set for Dec. 14.
