Cemetery walking tour

The Monroe County Historical Association will host a historic cemetery walking tour on from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Stroudsburg Cemetery, Dreher Avenue in Stroudsburg, and will honor Stroudsburg's Civil War veterans. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.

Guides will lead groups through the cemetery visiting 10 stations. Volunteers have conducted extensive research on local soldiers, and the short presentations at each grave site include topics such as the life of a soldier, women on the home front, the United States Colored Troop and headstone preservation techniques.Costumed members of the Pennsylvania 142nd Company G Civil War re-enactors will be available to answer additional questions and assist with graveside presentations. The group will host a stop along the tour to showcase authentic Civil War artifacts and a hands-on display.The Northampton Community College Band of Brothers (Monroe Campus) will also be participating. The two groups are partnering with the Monroe County Historical Association to raise awareness of the area's local history and to foster an appreciation for local soldiers, both past and present.There is a charge. Children under 5 are free. Presale reservations are available and tickets will be sold the day of the event. Parking is free at the Stroudsburg High School parking lot, 1100 W.
