Lady Olympians win third straight

Tom Condly was hoping his Jim Thorpe girls soccer team would feed off of its last two wins when it faced Tamaqua in a Schuylkill League Division I battle on Tuesday.

It took just 21 seconds for him to realize that it did.Jackie Condly scored unassisted with 39:39 still left in the first half to jump start her team and the Lady Olympians went on to a 6-2 victory."We talked about the last time we played them we gave up the game-losing goal in overtime in our stadium so we said lets play it like it's overtime and get off to a good start and we did," Condly said. "We scored in the first 30 seconds and the girls didn't look back after that."It's not what we expected. We know Tamaqua is tough and thought this was going to be a low scoring game and it wasn't. We're typically in a two to one or three to two type of game. We generally don't score six, but we moved the ball nicely and were able to finish today. So we'll take it."Jim Thorpe jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Autumn Cope scored almost 12 minutes after the first goal and Ilse Hassler added another with 6:44 left in the half. Both goals were assisted by Camille Principe.Tamaqua broke the ice when Morgan Boyle scored with 5:18 remaining until the break off a Taylor Fritz assist. The Olympians weren't done however, as sophomore Monae Bullock headed the ball into the net for a 4-1 advantage."I thought we possessed the ball real well and were able to keep it there," Condly added. "Their keeper (Taylor Fritz) was punting it and they were getting some breaks on us, but once we gained possession we were able to control it, keep it in there, and when you do that, good things happen."Jackie Condly gave Thorpe a 5-1 lead with 22:02 left, before Boyle scored her second goal for the Raiders just over a minute later. Bullock added an insurance goal for the Olympians with 4:26 remaining."Right off the bat they were just beating us to the ball," said Tamaqua coach Clem McCarroll. "I'm disappointed because we thought we had a chance to be competitive in this game and they got that quick goal. I don't ever remember a goal being scored that fast against us."You could see they were beating us to every ball. We just didn't have it today. You've got to win the battle at midfield and that's what they did."BOOKENDS ... Jackie Condly and Monae Bullock not only scored two goals apiece for the Olympians, their bookend goals at the start of the game and end of the first half were big momentum boosters. Condly scored early and Bullock's goal was with three seconds left before the half.SHOT COUNT ... The Olympians outshot the Raiders 16-9, with Tamaqua's Taylor Fritz saving four and Jim Thorpe's Rebecca Cressman saving seven.STREAK ... Jim Thorpe has now won three in a row beating Lehighton and North Schuylkill prior to the victory over the Blue Raiders, lifting them to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.
