Lehighton man gets probation

A Lehighton man who banged his head off the roof of a police cruiser and ripped a Palmerton police officer's jacket during a scuffle will serve six months probation and pay a total of $600 in fines.

Timothy Lee Eckhart, 28, pleaded guilty Friday before Carbon County President Judge Roger N. Nanovic to institutional vandalism, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.The charges stem from two cases.In the first, Oct. 30, 2010, Eckhart was taken into custody for public drunkenness by Palmerton police. He resisted, damaging the roof of the cruiser and tearing the jacket. In the second case, he was involved in an altercation in East Penn Township.Nanovic fined Eckhart $300 each for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct charges, and sentenced him to probation on the institutional vandalism charge. Nanovic also ordered Eckhart to pay $69 in restitution to Palmerton police, and $308 in restitution to EMC Insurance for a workers' compensation claim by the officer.The judge imposed a zero-tolerance condition for drugs and alcohol, and ordered Eckhart to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation. He was also charged court costs and fees.Eckart in July was removed from the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program for failing to report to the probation officer, undergo drug tests, pay court costs or perform his required community service.
