A Slatington man is listed in critical condition after his mattress caught fire Wednesday evening.

Borough Police Chief David Rachman said police responded to an apartment at 700 Main St. at 10:05 p.m.Rachman said Lehigh County Communications Center received a call from a resident from the building that said there was a man on fire, and requested the fire department and ambulance.Upon arrival, Rachman said police observed the man seated on the floor next to the bed who appeared to have severe burns on his upper and lower body.He said the fire had been extinguished by a fire extinguisher from a resident in the building before police arrival.Rachman said emergency medical services arrived on scene and transported the man to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where he was listed in critical condition. The preliminary indication is that the fire was accidental, he said."It appears he may have been smoking in bed," Rachman said. "There's no indication it was criminal in nature at this point."
