In May, a group of local business owners and community leaders met to discuss and develop a plan to form a foundation for Carbon County.Earlier this month, the initial Board and Officers were elected, and include Tina Dowd, Chairwoman; Chris Anthony, Vice-Chairman; Steve Ohl, secretary; and Jim Christman, treasurer.Other founding board members include Sheri Anthony, Tiffani Christman, John Dowd, Dr. Michael Everett, Mark and Pam Fludgate, and Richard and Darlene Nothstein."As a community foundation we will provide funding for important projects that will benefit the people of our county," said Tina Dowd.Dowd said the group has been working with Kurt Bauman from the Northeast Pennsylvania alliance to secure matching funds from the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Luzerne foundation. About $300,000 is available as a match if the group is able to raise the same amount locally, she said. The Carbon County Community Foundation plans to lead the community to a better future by creating permanent endowments that will continue to grow and make grants available.A Community Foundation is a tax exempt 501 (c)(3) public charity built by people who care about causes that matter. A small investment today can make a huge difference tomorrow. For more information on making a contribution, or how to get involved, contact any of the above board members, or email Tiffani Christman at
