Clements, Indians run over Devils

SHENANDOAH - The mission continues.

Lehighton's football team stayed the course Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium when it rode a pair of 100-yard rushing backs to a 47-12 victory over Shenandoah Valley. The victory keeps the Indians perfect on the season at 8-0.The highly favored Indians never broke stride from the opening kickoff. All-state candidate Wyatt Clements led the way with four touchdowns and 171 yards rushing on offense, and an interception on defense. He wasn't the only headliner in this Anthracite Football League matchup. There was Mike Mayernik scooting for 109 yards on just four carries, while snapping off a scintillating 85-yard touchdown on his first touch of the game."Honest to god, Mayernik can start on eight of the 10 teams in this league," said Lehighton coach Tom McCarroll. "He's a junior and has paid his dues. Having Clements in front of him is only his downfall. He got a couple of early carries and made the most of them."Lehighton reeled in three first-quarter touchdowns to take command after the first 12 minutes. Clements dashed 37 yards to cap off a two-play 60-yard march, which opened on a nifty 23-yard pass from quarterback Tyler Cann to Nick Chambers.Less than three minutes later, the Indians were adding a second touchdown. Lehighton failed to cleanly field a punt and ended up on its own 9. But it took just two plays to make it a 13-0 game as Mayernik put the pedal-to-the-medal to race 85 yards for a score.Tanner Haydt picked off a pass by Shenandoah Valley quarterback Ian McCole, and the Indians were working on a short-field needing just 39 yards to find the end zone. Cann threw a pair of completions to fuel the fire before Clements stuck it in from a yard away for a 20-0 lead.Shenandoah Valley answer when McCole kept nickel-and-diming the Indians' defense, marching his team 64 yards before hitting Joel Santana on a look-in pass for the score. McCole would throw 32 first half passes and 43 on the night."That wasn't our game plan," said Shenandoah Valley's first year coach Kevin Bolinsky. "We thought we could run the ball, but they failed to cover the flats and we were taking what they gave us."However the more talented Indians were never in a pickle. Clements would score his third touchdown on a 16-yard run, and Chambers hauled in a 63-yard scoring strike from Cann to roll 34-6 at the break."You know we respected that team. We knew they had athletes and they are headed in the right direction," said McCarroll. "Coach Bolinsky and his staff are going to bring the program around. He's the right man for them."Lehighton's is also heading in the right direction - and more times than not last night it ended up in the end zone. Clements got his fourth TD on a 26-yard run in the third quarter before backup sophomore quarterback Cody Scherer rang up the final points with a 24-yard run.WALTZING… Lehighton's ground game can wear a team down. It is brutal when you run Clements and Mayernik on back-to-back carries. In all, the Indians rushed for 367 yards on 28 touches.FLING IT … McCole went 16-43 for Shenandoah Valley for 186 yards. Cann had 117 yards on five completions, while throwing only nine times.DOWN THE STRETCH … Indians are on course to stay perfect and may have to in order to claim a District 11 Class AAA playoff spot. They finish with home games against Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe. If it wins out, the AFL championship is part of the benefit.
