Touchdown Club changes parade route, plans fireworks

A parade, followed by a pep rally and brief fireworks show, is likely to be held next month in Lehighton.

Borough council recently approved the Lehighton Touchdown Club's request to conduct all of the activities on Nov. 5.Council's decision came after it heard from Gerald Strubinger Jr., president of the Lehighton Touchdown Club.Strubinger said that as a result of the school district's construction project, the organization cannot do a bonfire this year as it has in the past.He then discussed a change in the parade route. This year, the parade will form at the high school parking lot, where it will continue onto Ninth Street, turn left on Ninth up to Coal Street, and then left onto Beaver Run Road to the high school/middle school stadium.Council unanimously approved the change in the parade route. The parade will start at 6 p.m., followed by a pep rally at 7 p.m. and a short fireworks show at 8 p.m.Strubinger said the tentative location to set the fireworks off is at the high school complex right around the baseball field's infield.Borough Fire Chief Pat Mriss said he would need to see a site plan launch point and the size of shells that would be used before he would grant his approval.Council said it would be in favor of the request, provided the borough would have no liability, and contingent on the fire chief's approval. No calls for towingAlso on Monday, Tarone Blocker, owner of Blocker's Collision Center Inc., 335 N. Center St., told council he is no longer receiving phone calls for towing.Blocker, who noted his family's business has been in operation for 67 years, said that he hasn't received a call for towing in four months. He says he cannot offer the services that bigger operations can."Small business is the backbone of the community," Blocker said. "I realize people have a choice where they want to go."Borough Police Chief Brian Biechy weighed in on the situation."If they're not calling you, I can't help it," Biechy said.Biechy said a lot of people have AAA.However, Blocker said that isn't an option for his business."I'm not able to get AAA," he said. "My business is suffering as well because of this."
