Course records ... 700 club ... soccer hat tricks

Every Friday during the fall sports season, the TIMES NEWS will publish its annual fall sports notebook reflecting back on the week that was, and highlighting both individual and team accomplishments, as well as interesting information that may have occurred in games, matches or meets. The weekly notebook will cover cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball, and will consist of storylines from the previous seven days. Today's notebook will reflect back on all the happenings from last Wednesday up through this past Tuesday. Times News sports writer Jason Boris will once again be handling the compilation of notes and is encouraging all local coaches to email him with noteworthy information that can be used in this column. Emails can be sent to

In addition, Weatherly's Jared Hinkle blazed a new Shenandoah Valley course record with a winning time of 19:21.RULING THE ROOST - Times News area teams and athletes ruled the roost at Saturday's Cardinal Clash Invitational at Pine Grove. The Jim Thorpe boys (58 points) and the Tamaqua girls (28 points) captured team titles, while Jim Thorpe's Dylan Bucior and Delana Nalesnik won individual championships. Bucior, who won his second Invitational this season, crossed the finish line in 16:45 (1:06 faster than last year's fifth-place finish). Bucior's time also surpassed the 16:56 mark that former Jim Thorpe teammate Jonathan Condly ran in winning the Cardinal Clash last season. Meanwhile, Nalesnik won the girls race in a time of 20:40. Last year, Nalesnik (competing for Panther Valley) finished in third place with a time of 22:06. In helping the Lady Raiders to the girls team title, Monika Shimko, Kailee Carroll and Sarah Maue finished in second, third and fourth-place respectively.VOLLEYBALLTHE 700 CLUB - In a huge Schuylkill League victory over Blue Mountain last Thursday, Marian's Abby Stankiewitch recorded 17 kills in the four-game match. Her 12th kill on the night gave her 700 for her career. The senior middle hitter currently has 721 kills, which places her in eight place on the all-time Marian career kills list. Teammate Maureen Kloap is also approaching a milestone, as she is within striking distance of her 500th career kill. Currently, Kloap is sitting at 483 career kills.ATTACKING RECORDS - In Saturday's non-league sweep of Catasauqua, Panther Valley's Jamey Mikovich recorded 12 kills to break the school's career kills record of 585 set by Amy Yusella in 2011. Her 10th kill of the match gave Mikovich the record, as the Panther Valley senior currently sits at 631 kills for her career. Since breaking the record, Mikovich has recorded 55 kills in her last three matches (consisting of nine games), which averages out to over 18 kills per match.SET IT AND FORGET IT - Mikovich wasn't the only one breaking records for Panther Valley this past week. Teammate Kelsey Van Horn broke two schools records in Tuesday's match against Jim Thorpe. The senior setter now holds the Panther Valley career record for service points and assists. With 15 assists against the Olympians, Van Horn broke Carly Markovich's previous career assists record of 774 "set" in 2010.SOCCERTHE EYE OF THE TIGER(S) - With a 3-0 Colonial League victory over Bangor last Friday, Northwestern head coach Nathan Hunsicker set the all-time wins record for boys soccer at Northwestern with his 65th career coaching victory. With wins over Jim Thorpe and Bangor later in the week, the Tigers skipper currently sits at 67 career wins for the undefeated Tigers (11-0).WOOD ON FIRE - In last week's notebook, we wrote about Palmerton's Monica Wood scoring 12 goals in a three-game span to account for 75-percent of the Bombers' offense. Wouldn't you know it, the Palmerton senior did it again. With a goal against Northwestern on Thursday, six goals against Lehighton on Saturday and another five goals against Wilson on Monday, Wood tallied 12 more goals in her last three games. Her strong performance against Lehighton marked the second time in 10 days that Wood has scored six goals in a game (the only Times News area player to do so this season). Over her last six games, Wood is averaging four goals per contest and has accounted for 24 of her team's last 32 goals.SUPER SATURDAY - In the first 12 days of the season, there were nine "hat tricks" recorded by Times News area athletes. Eleven more hat tricks were added over the next seven days. However, on this past Saturday alone, there were seven hat tricks recorded in the span of four hours. Andrew Goodalf and JD Haaf scored three goals apiece to lead Northwestern to a 10-0 shutout of Jim Thorpe, while the Lehighton tandem of Dan Baka and Frank Bokan tacked on three goals apiece in a 12-1 victory over Tamaqua. Palmerton's Monica Wood accounted for six goals, Northern Lehigh's Dan Belfonti tallied four goals and Tamaqua's Morgan Boyle added three goals of her own to culminate the day. Wood (5 goals on Monday), Bokan (5 goals on Friday) and Haaf (3 goals on Thursday) had two hat tricks apiece this week. Others scoring three or more goals in a game this past week include: Northern Lehigh's Jill Olewine (3) and Tamaqua's Lynn Kistler (3).TENNISTEN(NIS) WINS - Even though Tamaqua suffered a 6-1 setback to Northampton on Monday, number three singles player Amy Gardiner earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Grace Lewis for the Blue Raiders' lone point. The win was Gardiner's 10th of the season (10-5 overall record), which is the most wins by any tennis player in the Times News coverage area this season.
