Monroe mother jailed after child incident

A 44-year-old mother, who police said refused to cooperate with Children & Youth Services personnel regarding the welfare of her 8-year-old child, is imprisoned after police disarmed her during an altercation at her residence at 10:26 a.m. Sept. 23.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police said Kelly A. Sylvester of Canadensis was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Phillip Reilly on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and terroristic threats, and committed to the Monroe County Correctional Facility in Snydersville in lieu of $50,000 bail.Police said they were dispatched to assist county agency personnel, who were assigned to check on the welfare of the child at the Sylvester residence since it was reported the child had not been enrolled in school and the family had been noncompliant with attempts to address the issue.Police said the mother appeared in the window of the home brandishing a handgun. When police made several attempts to speak to the mother, she told them she was unwilling to speak to them or to allow any type of welfare check on the child.Police said a protective custody order was then issued by the Court of Common Pleas but the mother refused communications with police and would not allow them access to the child. Police said they did receive assistance from the family of Sylvester, however, during the time police were gathered with family members, Sylvester brandished the gun again in the window.Eventually, police obtained a search warrant for the residence and an arrest warrant for the mother, and at 9:54 p.m., forcibly entered the residence and took custody of the woman and child, the latter then having been turned over to Children & Youth Services.
