Naloxone training scheduled

The Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission wants to help people with loved ones who are addicted to heroin and opioids.

The commission will hold two community naloxone trainings for families who want to learn what they can do. The trainings will take place at 6 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Nesquehoning Hose Company 1, 953 E. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning; and 10 a.m. Dec. 12 at the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission office, 428 S. Seventh St., Suite 1, Lehighton. The events are sponsored by the commission, as well as the Pike County Parents for Prevention and funded through the Carbon County Action Committee."I believe with the growing opioid epidemic in Carbon County, having naloxone accessible will save lives that could have been lost," Jamie Drake, acting director of the commission, said. "Having the opportunity to reverse an overdose and save the life a friend or family member is a powerful option we did not have available in the past."I urge all community members impacted by addiction to heroin or opioid pain medications to take advantage of the training," she said.People who attend the training by presenter Michael Buckley will learn how to use naloxone properly in the event of an overdose, and will receive a free naloxone kit."We have heard from many who have tried to obtain naloxone on their own that there are many hurdles and many have been unsuccessful in receiving the prescription," Drake said. "This training has removed those hurdles."For more information or if you have questions, contact Carolee at the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission at 610-377-5177 ext. 2106.
