Fire damages Lower Towamensing home

A Lower Towamensing family was displaced from their home by a fire that took place the day before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Firefighters say the blaze started in a wood-burning stove that was left unattended.Crews were called to a home on Summit Street around 10:50 a.m. Wednesday for a dwelling fire with flames showing.No one was inside the house at the time. A dog was able to escape the house unharmed.According to Aquashicola Fire Department Chief Bill George, the fire was limited to the living room area around the wood burning stove, which had been left unattended.George said that the fire spread to an indoor wood pile, and caused "significant" damage to the interior of the home. There was virtually no damage to the exterior.The homeowners were displaced by the fire, but most of their belongings were spared, albeit with some water and smoke damage.The street was closed for more than an hour as crews cleaned up after the fire.George said that the family was seeking shelter with a relative, however they would also be housed by the Red Cross if need be.Multiple agencies responded to the fire including Aquashicola Fire Department, Bowmanstown Volunteer Fire Department, Palmerton Fire Company. East Penn Fire Company, Franklin Township Fire Company and Lehighton Ambulance.
