Weatherly board talks future budgets

The Weatherly School Board heard a brief presentation by Zachary K. Pearce of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association about the association's website, and the upcoming release of the state budget.

"There is a potential referendum for public education that will force you to go out into the public for funding. We're just getting out now and saying no," he said."You're disagreeing with the referendum?" board member Chad Obert asked Pearce."Correct. We are putting together a budget action day, where we are working to get you out and go to the capital to protest.""School boards are forced to raise taxes because states underfund us. The public should have a say," Obert said."It's going to blow back on legislators," Pearce said."We are already starting on next year's budget. Any advice?" Superintendent Thomas McLaughlin asked."Be cautious. Weatherly is unique with funding, but just be cautious. Let's hope they make a budget on time next year."In other matters, four Weatherly students were recognized by the board for the month of October.Senior of the month Shelby Berger volunteers as the boy's soccer team manager and serves on the yearbook club. Berger's documentary "Living with CHD - Morgan's Journey" debuted during Morgan's Miracle Heart - A Day of Congestive Heart Disease Awareness on May 16 and helped raised $2,100.Sixth-grade student of the month Jash Khatiwala is a member of both middle school band and chorus while eighth-grader Albert Kislan belongs to the middle school band and participates in the SHINE program.Seventh-grade student of the month Tiffany McCroy was not present at the meeting.Parent Teacher Association President Donnell Stump thanked the board and all who attended the Weatherly Drug Expo."I would like to thank the board and all the volunteers who supported the expo. Some were worried about the turnout, but it was successful. We all learned a lot. It was a very good event," she said.Trent Dempsey, student representative, gave his monthly report to the board."The honors blood drive had a good turn out. The people from the Red Cross said it was the most students they ever saw donate."
