Does my library accept donations?

Whether they are holding a Secret Santa program or simply decorating for the holidays, local libraries are actively accepting donations throughout November and December - and all year long.

Donation policies vary, but most libraries take donations of new or gently used books, DVDs, toys and games. Libraries are also searching for items as varied as cake pans and Legos, depending on their individual offerings and lending needs."We'll take just about anything that is in good working order," said Mariann Kmetz, director of the Dimmick Memorial Library in Jim Thorpe. "If someone donates a book that is relatively new, we consider it for the collection if we don't already have it."Cleaning off your shelves and thinking of donating a book that is in less than perfect condition? Consider earmarking those books for the library's book sale.Donations that are not added to the library's general collection, typically because the donated item is already available on the shelf (or the donation is not in appropriate shape for lending or public use) are typically sold at that library's book sale. Proceeds of each library's book sale benefit that library and the surrounding community utilizing the library.Textbooks, encyclopedias, and other dated materials are not generally accepted for book sales or lending collections.Library users can also donate the money toward the purchase of a new book or media item. After a library staff member has purchased the item, a commemorative note is added to indicate that the item was purchased in honor or memory of an individual or group."Instead of spending money on a birthday gift, for example, you can donate money to purchase a book at the library,"' said Kmetz.Monetary donations can also help libraries secure additional in-kind funding, as some state funding is tied to the fundraising level and collection size of each library.Contact your local library for their specific donation policy.
