Bucior, Capparell medal

HERSHEY - A season full of tremendous accomplishments ended with one more for Jim Thorpe's Dylan Bucior and Marian Catholic's Tina Capparell at Satuday's PIAA Cross Country Championships.

The two talented runners left Hershey with medals around their necks, an honor well earned following months of hard work, much of it unglamorous and without massive crowds cheering them on.For Bucior, the 17th place result in the Class AA race gave him his first state medal in his second trip. Capparell's 18th place finish was more than good enough to secure her second straight medal after she placed 16th a year ago as a freshman.Following a 39th place result last fall, Bucior, a Schuylkill League champion and district runner-up, knew he would have his work cut out for him in order to make the top-25 and earn All-State honors."At the beginning, I was really nervous because last year I got boxed in really bad and was pushed and shoved," the senior said. "But not this time. I made sure I got out really quick and I didn't have any problems."That he didn't, as Bucior started fast and finished strong, crossing the line in 16:45, an improvement on last year's 17:08."The pace was so fast," Bucior said of the race, which was won by Lake-Lehman's Dominic Hockenbury in a blistering 15:49. "My first mile was like a 4:49-4:50, somewhere around there. That's the fastest I've ever run a first mile in a cross country race. It was so fast. The whole race was fast."After the first mile, I really started feeling it, with all the hills. But I just kept telling myself, 'You're a senior, it's your last race, just push through it.'"And (being on the medal stand), that's what I came out here to do. I really wanted to come out here and get a medal."The same could be said for Capparell, who entered 2015 with high hopes following a stellar freshman campaign that included Schuylkill League and District 11 Class A individual championships. While she has met or exceeded expectations this year, a fact evidenced by last week's second straight district title, the sophomore wasn't so sure she'd be on the podium again after not being 100 percent for much of the season."Honestly, I thought I wasn't going to medal," said Capparell. "The way I was running this year, I thought I wasn't going to get it, but I was able to hold on."Capparell's time of 20:08 was a tick slower than last year's 20:03."At the start, I got boxed in a little bit," she said. "But I was able to make it around and go to the outside. There were a good amount of girls ahead of me, but I just kept picking them off as much as I could."I did surprisingly well on the hills, and was able to pass a few girls. Then it was it was just neck-and-neck for the rest of the race."Capparell was joined in Hershey by sister Nicole, who finished 47th (21:01).The opportunity to make it to states as a freshman - and to do it with her sister - was something Nicole cherished, and an experience that has her hoping for more next year."It was good, I would have liked to have medaled," she said. "We trained together and pushed each other. Coming here was a great experience."Next year, I'm definitely going to try train harder so I can medal."While Capparell and Bucior were the only two runners from the Times News area to leave with any hardware, several others came close to earning All-State honors. In the girls' Class AA race, Northwestern freshman Madeline Consuelos took 27th with a time of 19:59."It was amazing," Consuelos said of the experience. "I kind of came in here knowing I'd be in the 20s. So I'm kind of bummed that I didn't get that 25th, but I was close."The strong run by Consuelos led the Lady Tigers to a seventh-place finish in the Class AA team standings, a result head coach Chris Stitzel was more than pleased with."I'm just really proud of the kids and all the hard work they gave us," he said. "The future looks bright for them. Hopefully we can come back next year and get some of those individual medals."Pleasant Valley's Seth Slavin narrowly missed out on a medal in the boys' Class AAA race, taking 29th in 16:23."I am very happy," the junior said. "Everything leading up to the race went perfectly fine. I came in very confident and knew what was going to happen."I knew that it was going to be close. Coming on to the hill, I was in about 25th place and was just hanging in there, hanging in there. But I just didn't have the leg speed I needed."While Slavin couldn't deny he was hoping to be a few spots higher in the finishing order, he was still proud of what he had done."I would have liked a medal. I definitely would have liked a medal. Who wouldn't have liked a medal?" he said. "But you come into the race, and 50 kids want a medal, and only 25 get one."I was glad I could be on that edge and in contention to get one."BACK ON TOP. … There were four repeat individual champions at this year's meet. Jake Brophy of Central Bucks East (Class AAA) and Dominic Hockenbury of Lake-Lehman (Class AA) captured their second consecutive titles. On the girls side, Dallas' Ally Rome (Class AA) picked up a second gold medal. Perhaps the most impressive performance, however, was Vincentian Academy's Marianne Abdalah. The junior earned her third straight individual title in the Class A race, and now has a chance to finish her career as a four-time state champion. New champions were crowned in the boys Class A and girls Class AAA races, after defending race winners Griffin Molino (South Williamsport) and Brianna Schwartz (Shaler Area) graduated.PIAA CROSS COUNTRYBOYSCLASS AAATEAM SCORES (TOP FIVE)1.
