Marian volleyball team sweeps Tri-Valley

POTTSVILLE - It's rare that you can hear a "pin drop" at Martz Hall.

But that's exactly how sluggish the Class A District 11 semifinal match between Tri-Valley and Marian began - with a ton of unforced errors and sloppy play. After a nip-and-tuck sequence, the Fillies finished up on an 8-3 streak to take the opening game. The momentum toward the end of that first game seemed to carry over for Marian. The kills started piling up for the Fillies, and Doc Fallabel's squad took care of business in a sweep of Tri-Valley, 25-17, 25-12, 25-8."We started off slow with some errors, but once we cleaned them up and adjusted to their (Tri-Valley) game, we were able to come out with the win," said Marian sophomore outside hitter Jasmine Mooney. "Now we've got to prepare for Nativity for a third time."The Fillies' aggression started to pick up in the second game, as Mooney, Abigail Stankiewitch and Maureen Kloap combined for 13 kills. The trio of Fillies combined for 33 kills during the victory."They out-hit us, they have tall girls, they play the floor well," said Tri-Valley head coach Bonnie Schwalm. "They don't have a ton of weak links. We came out in the first set, and gave them a game. We asked our girls to do that, and they did. It's hard to compete with them (Marian)."Fallabel wasn't exactly thrilled with the way the Fillies came out of the gate."Is today the last day you want to play high school volleyball?," Fallabel hypothetically asked. "That's how I'm going to propose the question (to his team). If we had a real tough team to play against tonight, it would have been our last game."But right now, it's our seniors that need to realize that each game could be the last game that they will ever play in high school. And that's how we're going to play the rest of the season."Marian and Nativity have been the "cream of the crop" of District 11 Class A for years. The two squads will square off for the third time this season on Thursday in the D-11 Class A Championship at Minersville at 7 p.m."They're (Nativity) playing very good volleyball, it's all about how the supporting cast will play for them," said Fallabel. "The middle is playing well, they're a strong team, and we all know it will be another tough task."DIGGIN' THE EFFORT … Five different Fillies had at least six digs during the semifinal win against Tri-Valley. With Lauren Nietz graduated, Gianna Agosti had some big shoes to fill as the team's new libero. "With her athletic talent, she has the ability to potentially be one of the best liberos ever in the program," said Fallabel. "She's such a great player, and only a sophomore." Agosti had eight digs during the win.NEW LEADER, GREAT SUCCCESS ... Tri-Valley had no volleyball coach in July - until Bonnie Schwalm stepped in to take over the helm of the program. "We stepped in (in) July to make sure these girls had a team," said Schwalm. "In order for us to get this far, it's a great accomplishment. They're lucky to even be here. We have talent on this team and athletic ability, and we feel like we had a really great season. We have some juniors on our team that will need to step up next year, and our JV team, who was 15-3 - we'll be expecting a lot of our sophomores next year to keep this program going in the right direction."
