Tide blanks Raiders

ORWIGSBURG - When opportunity knocks you have to take advantage and open the door.

That has been the story of the Tamaqua baseball team over the past two seasons. Countless clutch plays, winning hits, and stellar performances from the mound earned the Raiders back-to-back District 11 Championships. On Saturday, Tamaqua's quest for a third title was cut short as Pottsville was the team that executed when it was presented with opportunities to score. It took four innings for anybody to score, but the Tide struck first and once they did they never looked back, defeating Tamaqua 4-1 to advance to the District 11 AAA Championship. It all started in the fourth, when Travis Blankenhorn hit a bloop single that dropped in between the second baseman and centerfielder. The Tide then executed. Blankenhorn horn moved to second on a passed ball and then third on a Ty Painter ground out. Darion Jacoby's sac fly to center field scored Blankenhorn to give Pottsville a 1-0 lead."It sounds cliche, but these guys really work hard at practice and it shows in our execution," said Pottsville coach Mike Welsh. "All season long we've been able get our seven, eight, and nine hitters on base, which has given our top of the lineup guys the chance to do their thing."Saturday was no different for the Tide as that's how they got some insurance in the fifth.Trent Barnes had an RBI in the inning and Blankenhorn came through from the lead off spot once again, hitting a two RBI triple that gave Pottsville a 4-0 advantage, heading into the sixth."Trent Barnes hit was huge and then I just came up and wanted to put the ball in play to get us some more runs," said Blankenhorn. "Eli was throwing so well and I just wanted to get him a few more runs. In a game like this against a team like Tamaqua you have to get as many runs as you can when you have the opportunities."Nabholz dominated throughout the day, allowing just four hits, while striking out five.Tamaqua got to Nabholz in the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but couldn't convert that opportunity into any runs. It was a shot for the Raiders to get back into the ball game."That was out opportunity and we just couldn't come up with a hit," said Tamaqua coach Jeff Reading. "Give Pottsville credit. They did the things they need to do to win the game when they had their chances and we didn't."Tamaqua added it's lone run in the top of the seventh on a Conner Hartung RBI, but that's all Nabholz would allow. For Tamaqua, Casey Rother and Nate MacDonald each had two hits a piece."This senior group has left a legacy here that nobody from Tamaqua will ever forget," said Reading. "It's tough to say goodbye to these kids. They definitely made their mark and they're the reason why this program is where it is today."Tamaqua 000 000 1 - 1 4 0Pottsville 000 130 x - 4 4 1Rottet and Rother; Nabholz and C.
