Dugan, Campbell lift Bombers

Reese Dugan pitched two shutouts against Catasauqua this year, but she couldn't wait to make amends for the one time she didn't blank the Rough Riders.

Lauren Campbell waited almost two weeks to get another shot at Catasauqua. When she finally did, she made the most of it.For Palmerton's battery and the entire Bomber team, the wait was worth it.Behind outstanding games from Dugan and Campbell, Palmerton defeated Catasauqua, 7-0, in the quarterfinal round of the District 11 Class AA softball playoffs on Thursday. The Bombers' victory avenged a loss to Catty 12 days earlier in the opening round of the Colonial League playoffs."We haven't played a game since they beat us so it's been a pretty long layoff," said Palmerton coach Robert Hock. "We spent a lot of that time working hard on fundamentals and I think that paid off. I think we were solid in all areas pitching, hitting, fielding, baserunning. It was a good performance."Hock said that despite losing to the Rough Riders in their most recent game, the Bombers didn't lack confidence heading into the contest."We shut them out twice during the regular season so we went in knowing that if we played our game we would be alright," said Hock. "Reese (Dugan) only gave up a total of four runs in three games against them, so it was just a matter of finding some offense and Lauren (Campbell) took care of that early."Campbell did it by drilling a three-run homer to right centerfield in the bottom of the first inning. The blast followed an error, and singles by Jordan Boyer and Janel Tracy. Boyer's hit plated Darion Jacoby with the first run before Campbell's first homer of the season made it 4-0."I couldn't wait to get another shot at them after they knocked us out of the league playoffs," said Campbell. "This was the fourth time we've seen their starting pitcher and I had pretty good success against her in the previous games. I think I had four extra base hits against her."I was looking for a fastball and that's what I got. It was out over the plate a little bit so I just went with the pitch and hit it to the opposite field. I think it really helped get our team pretty excited."Not that Dugan was going to need any more offensive support but the Bombers gave her some anyway when they added three more runs in the second inning. Tracy had an RBI single to score Jacoby before a pair of wild pitches eventually scored Tracy and courtesy runner Avery Neipert."I had good success against them in the regular season games, but I was anxious to get a chance to face them again after they beat us in the league playoffs," said Dugan. "I was able to stay ahead of their hitters today and my defense did a great job behind me."Lauren's home run in the first was also a huge lift. It's nice going out there to pitch with a cushion like I had. It allowed me to relax a little more."Dugan was in control the entire game. She surrendered just two hits, both bunt singles, while striking out five and not walking a batter."Reese threw a great game," said Hock. "She got ahead of the hitters and had very few deep counts. It was a really nice performance because Catty is a good hitting team."Palmerton (15-7) had 11 hits in the game. Boyer, Tracy and Campbell led the assault with two hits apiece.Hannah Edwards had both hits for Catasauqua (13-10).The Bombers will face another league rival in Pen Argyl on Tuesday in the semifinal round at 5 p.m.Catasauqua 000 000 0 - 0 2 1Palmerton 430 000 x - 7 11 0Ayache, Reichl (2) and Bellesfield; Dugan and Campbell. lora george/special to the times news Palmerton's Avery Neipert scores a run on a wild pitch as Catasauqua pitcher Alexia Reichl moves in to cover the plate. The batter is Reese Dugan (14).
