Support Gerhard, Nothstein

Dear Editor,

Since their election to office in 2011, Tom Gerhard and Wayne Nothstein have proven over and over that they are qualified to continue as Carbon County commissioners. Despite the stagnant economy and the accompanying rise in expenses, they operate Carbon County on a balanced budget.Keeping our prison functional and preventing our court system from crumbling under the heavy workload have been a large part of their average workday. They've streamlined staff through attrition to help control expenses. They were able to cut losses by discontinuing the floundering recycling program. Some believe the animal shelter is insignificant, but as an animal lover, I believe the issue of lost and abandoned animals must be addressed. The shelter is now working efficiently, thanks to its dedicated staff.Tom and Wayne had no part in purchasing the Packerton Yards, but they're working with the minority commissioner toward a resolution. When the impasse couldn't be overcome to develop this property, they did the right thing by putting it on the market.Recent accolades have come from volunteer firefighters regarding the proposed training center. The commissioners are working with the firemen's and fire chiefs' associations, both of which have become a fundamental part of this project that's expected to be financed with grants. These groups have been studying the needs and options since 2008.One fire official recently commended the commissioners by saying, "Some of us have been in this business for over 40 years, and never in history have we had a board of commissioners who have been so supportive of emergency services."Tom and Wayne safeguard our county's money like it's their own. If you want commissioners who are experienced, genuine, level-headed, honest, responsible and of high integrity, then please join me in voting for Tom Gerhard and Wayne Nothstein on May 19.Lee BeckerEast Penn Township
