Vacant East Penn supervisor seat filled

Denied a chance to be on the primary election ballot due to late paperwork submission, David Bryfogle will get his chance to be an East Penn Township supervisor after all.

By a 3-1 vote Monday night, Bryfogle was tabbed to replace Cory Smith, who resigned last month to focus on his position as the township roadmaster.Bryfogle will serve until Jan. 3, 2016.The final two years of Smith's term will be decided in November's general election.Voting for Bryfogle, who was one of seven candidates for the open slot, were Dean Kercsmar, Deanna Cunfer and John Strockoz. Jacob Nothstein voted against the appointment.Becoming supervisor has been a six-year mission for Bryfogle and has finally paid off."I've tried before and I didn't make it," he said. "My biggest goal is to support and defend the taxpayers of this township. The one thing you have to remember is if it weren't for the taxpayers, there wouldn't be a township.A proud Vietnam veteran, Bryfogle said respect and honesty are big traits of his."I'll treat people right," he said. "That is important to me."Bryfogle planned to run for a six-year term as supervisor in the upcoming primary election, but was one of five candidates who had their candidacy challenged by Nothstein and Nothstein's wife.Carbon County Judge Joseph Matika allowed all but Bryfogle to remain on the ballot.Bryfogle admitted to filing his required Statement of Financial Interests form with the township three days after the March 10 deadline."I made the motion and voted for David tonight because he was put in a position with some other individuals and was the only one who told the truth," Kercsmar said after the meeting. "I respect that he put all the facts on the table. Looking over everything, that stood out to me."Bryfogle said he still intends to run a write-in campaign for supervisor even though his name will not be on the ballot."I made an honest mistake filing that form late," he said. "I'm going the write-in route now."
