903 bridge project limits parking

There will be fewer parking spaces available in the Carbon County parking lot come Monday as the Route 903 bridge project moves forward.

On Thursday, the county commissioners approved an agreement with Allan A. Myers LP, the company constructing the new Route 903 bridge, to use additional parking spaces/meters in the lot when bringing in some of the 59 beams for the bridge. The total payment to the county for the spots, which will be unavailable Monday through Friday between March 23 and April 23, is $2,760.Construction vehicles will also be utilizing the Packerton Yards site as a secondary staging area for the project. The agreement calls for the use of approximately 20 paved parking spaces that will be used to allow for the superload tractor-trailers, which will range up to 160 feet in length, to be able to complete their entry into the lot with the beams; as well as the overflow parking area, which has approximately 50 unpaved spaces. The only exception to the delivery dates will be April 6, Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said, noting that April 6 is jury selection and approximately 150 additional people will be in the county seat. No beams will be delivered that day.Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard said that the beams will range from 45 feet to 133 feet in length, and that because of that, the trucks bringing in the beams need a significantly larger clearance into the lot.In addition, Gerhard said that the company will also be bringing a 500-ton crane on Monday that will be used to lift the larger beams into place."It's an exciting project," he said. "But expect traffic delays."According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Thursday afternoon, the first of the beams is expected to arrive from Lancaster around 11 a.m. Monday with an additional three beams coming in after that. When beams are in the area, motorists should expect approximately 20-minute stoppages to allow for the trucks to enter the county lot.Gerhard said that the county will be notified when the beams leave the plant in Lancaster.PennDOT said that the first several weeks of the deliveries will take place on the western side of the Lehigh River along Route 209.Beginning around April 13, motorists traveling Route 903 on the eastern side of the Lehigh River will be affected by beams as the remaining deliveries will come in off Route 903.Motorists should expect traffic delays around the construction site between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday between Monday and May.The $28.1 million bridge construction project began in February 2014 and has been in full swing ever since. The project is expected to be complete in July 2017.
